Apple Valley Animal Shelter
Apple Valley, CA
Wald, Ruhnke & Dost Architects was retained by the town of Apple Valley to design a new shelter to replace the existing facilities for Apple Valley Municipal Animal Shelter.
The new 36,000-square-foot shelter was designed to accommodate the shelter, shelter staff, animal control, and code enforcement. The new single-story building incorporates many concepts of sustainable design, including day lighting, low VOC paints and sealants, a cool roof, provisions for using gray water for irrigation and the use of native drought-tolerant landscaping. This shelter also utilizes radiant heating in the kennel floors for the comfort of the animals and has a light, open mall feel to present the animals to the public for adoption.
