Wave Street Apartments
Wald, Ruhnke & Dost Architects was retained by a private developer, in partnership with the City of Monterey, to design this three-story building with 21 one-bedroom, 100% low-income workforce housing apartments. It is located in the heart of historic Cannery Row and it was critical that the architecture blend with surrounding Cannery Row structures. The economical building design was ideal for providing affordable units at a reasonable construction cost.
The architectural style is reminiscent of an old cannery, with simple, large-scale massing and a uniform series of residential-style windows. Due to the project's close proximity to the City's existing parking structure, much of the parking is supplied in the City's garage.
Since the target tenants are hospitality- and tourist- based workers, many will be within walking distance of their place of employment. This reduces the need for on-site parking and reduces vehicle traffic, pollution and noise.
