Soledad Farm Labor and Affordable Housing
Wald, Ruhnke and Dost Architects was retained by the Housing Authority of the County of Monterey to develop a master plan for the construction of farm labor and affordable housing with support services for two sites in Soledad. The project was completed in 3 phases and includes 195 units of affordable housing, ranging in size from 1 to 5 bedrooms, an on-site day care facility, playgrounds, a community center, management offices, and maintenance shop.
The projects were designed to integrate with the surrounding residential community with a park-like setting with pathways for pedestrian access and includes interior parking to maintain community aesthetics. It was important to maintain a "street front" appearance for the town homes facing surrounding single family homes in order for this project to blend into the neighborhood. The project included the use of solar panels on residential and community buildings, to offset the electrical demand of the project.
