East Cliff Family Health Center

East Cliff Family Health Center

Location

Santa Cruz, CA

Project Type

WRD Architects joined Santa Cruz Community Health Centers to plan and construct the East Cliff Family Health Center in the Live Oak neighborhood of Santa Cruz.  The completed OSHPD-3 clinic supports the Centers’ goal of providing high-quality primary care, pediatric services and health education to all clients regardless of economic status.

The Center features an open central work area enclosed in clear glazing.  Here, healthcare professionals can work as teams and sometimes wave to their young patients as they leave.  Bright accent colors are used throughout the facility, and frosted glass doors on individual patient rooms provide daylighting while still protecting patients’ privacy.  Significant efforts were made to introduce natural lighting within the former bank building, resulting in skylights throughout.  A top-lit former vault now serves as a small conference room, and day-lit corridors now extend deep into the building.

WRD provided architectural design, space planning, interior design, and owner representative services for the 9,000-square-foot space, which includes 15 exam rooms, a procedure room, three behavioral health counseling rooms, on-site lab services, open and private office spaces, along with breakroom and conference room areas.

Dientes

Location

Santa Cruz, CA

Project Type

WRD Architects assisted Dientes, a nonprofit dental clinic, to expand its Santa Cruz facility by 2,400 square feet.  The newly established Helen Webster Children’s Dental Center accommodates the needs of young patients with a seven-chair pediatric wing that includes kid-friendly waiting room areas and tooth brushing stations for teaching oral hygiene.

WRD Architects maximized clinical efficiencies by studying and incorporating staff workflow into the space plan. The naturally lit OSHPD-3 facility has a centrally located panoramic X-ray space and a sterilization room to serve both the adult and pediatric wings.  As a result of this project, Dientes is now able to accommodate 8,800 additional visits a year — 40 percent more than the clinic’s original capacity.

611 Abbott Medical Office Building

611 Abbott Medical Office Building

Location

Salinas, CA

Project Type

WRD Architects partnered with Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System to design a two-story medical office building complete with luxuriant landscaping throughout the site, including mature olive trees at the front entry and a rooftop garden accessible to all building users.  The ground floor houses a physical therapy space, which includes an MRI unit and a therapy spa.  The upper floor features nurse training and administrative areas, along with a state-of-the-art clinical simulation lab.   The lab includes a control room, two simulation areas and debriefing rooms.

“Simulation has been used for many years in aviation, the military and in medicine,” said Rachel Failano, RN, MSN, Clinical Nurse Educator, Clinical Simulation/Skills Lab Coordinator, “but it is new territory for nursing, and in a non-teaching hospital setting in particular. It adds an entirely new dimension to learning. We can create specific patient care environments and scenarios using high-fidelity, human simulators, rather than patients, to learn the most effective and safest ways to respond in situations.”

Outside the medical facility, Bio Swales, treatment systems, sediment filters, and grease interceptors were designed to treat and control stormwater from parking lots.

Monterey County Health Department

Monterey County Health Department

Location

Salinas, CA

Project Type

WRD Architects worked with Monterey County to design the new 47,000-square-foot Health Department headquarters. To reduce downtime and eliminate the need for interim housing, the new building was designed to be constructed adjacent to the existing headquarters, which has now been demolished. Materials were recycled during the demolition process, and the existing asphalt was ground up and used as the foundation for the new parking lots.

The new facility consolidates four Bureaus – Administration, Public Health, Behavioral Health, and Environmental Health – as well as the Public Health Laboratory, into an open office environment which improves communication, maximizes natural lighting, and accommodates growth and fluctuations in program sizes.

The multi-level design steps down the existing topography and minimizes building mass while tying into the existing Natividad medical campus.

The back wall of the bar is made of reclaimed wood staves from used wine barrels and original barrel heads were customized with a wine-tap system for patrons. The bar is curved stainless steel evoking the feel of chardonnay fermentation tanks. The incorporation of LED lighting controls and digital control solutions support the dynamic environment’s needs.

Water + Leaves

Water + Leaves

Location

Monterey, CA

Project Type

WRD Architects worked with a visionary owner to create a contemporary space for the first specialty tea and coffee shop on Monterey’s Fishermans Wharf.

The client’s passion for tea inspired the design process. Four high performance digital tea steepers maintain the optimal temperature, pressure and timing for each variety of tea. Several varieties of raw, local honey are displayed in six giant dispensers behind the counter.

The cafe’s commitment to sustainable, organic practices is reflected in the design. The exposed ceiling features natural wood while the new balcony addition and glass doors leading to it provide a clear, uninhibited view of the Monterey Bay. A mural near the balcony connects the Bay’s fishing industry with the owner’s own extended family.

Project Type

WRD Architects’ multi-phased expansion and remodel of this 56,000-square-foot property included the design of a new 29-room building in addition to the renovation of the existing hotel facilities to complement the historic architecture found in downtown Monterey.
