Natividad Medical Center Courtyard

Natividad Medical Center Courtyard

Location

Salinas, CA

Project Type

WRD completed a set of improvements for the existing Main Lobby Courtyard at Natividad Medical Center with proceeds from an anonymous donor, who gifted $950,000 for the entire project. To fit within the provided budget, improvements to the courtyard were limited to plants, paving, new outdoor furniture and lighting.

The goal of this project was to create serene and comfortable outdoor places for family members and patients to enjoy.  Our design divides the space into several “feature” areas consisting of planting walls, dedication plaques, and a floor labyrinth. There are also tables and chairs lining the edges of the courtyard open for anyone to use.

Taylor Farms Family Health & Wellness Center

Taylor Farms Family Health & Wellness Center

Location

Gonzales, CA

Project Type

Aiming to facilitate expansion of specialty care within the Southern Monterey County region, WRD was tasked with tripling the size of an existing SVMHS OSHPD-3 clinic building. WRD’s large addition allowed for essential services in an underserved area; added Specialty Care services included Pediatrics, Cardiopulmonary and Behavioral Health along with space for Diabetes education and awareness and Childbirth and Parenting classes.

The building design harmonizes with the proportions and symmetry of the existing 6,400-square-foot Mediterranean-style medical building, while a new high-ceiling lobby creates a recognizable entry and focal point while supporting additional patient visits. The existing former lobby was converted into a multi-purpose room intended for community education and training.

Dignity Health Clinic

Dignity Health Clinic

Location

Scotts Valley, CA

Project Type

We had the pleasure of designing the newly opened Dignity Health Clinic in Scotts Valley, CA. Formerly leased office space, this tenant improvement project resulted in a surprisingly chic medical clinic with the most up-to-date technology and design finishes.

The 5,000 squarefoot space boasts a modern lobby, nine exam rooms, an open concept office area and more. Each exam room has a door on either side –one for patient access from the lobby area and the other for staff usage that attaches to the office area– which lends to both privacy and convenience.

Our interior design team worked within prescribed guidelines to model the color scheme and finishes after similar Dignity Health clinics across the United States. The result of this is a mixture of cool greys and warm browns complemented by bright orange accent features. The finishes in the clinic are not only stylish, but also highly functional and conform to all required medical clinic standards.

Santa Cruz Community Health Clinic

Santa Cruz Community Health Clinic

Location

Santa Cruz, CA

Project Type

The Santa Cruz Community Health Clinic is the second of three projects to be completed on the same piece of property as part of a healthy living community. The goal of the community is to provide accessible and affordable housing and healthcare for low income families. Also a part of this healthy living community are the Dientes Community Dental Clinic (directly across from SCCH Clinic) and a new 57-unit apartment complex still in progress.

SCCH’s completed health clinic is 20,000 square feet and focuses on creating a safe space for women and children’s health. Three distinct color palates separate each major section of the clinic by purple, blue, and yellow. A local artist was commissioned to fill the clinic with paintings that incorporate each of these color schemes.

The clinic will also be offering health classes to further the knowledge of the community. In addition, a portion of the clinic is currently leased by a law firm that provides access to much needed legal services for lower income families.

Dientes Dental Clinic

Dientes Community Dental Clinic

Location

Santa Cruz, CA

Project Type

WRD Architects partnered with Dientes Community Dental once again to build a new dental clinic in Santa Cruz from the ground up. This 5,500 square foot, single-story building features 11 exam rooms, several accessory rooms, and a spacious daylit lobby. The walls are adorned with murals from local artist, Tessa Hope Hasty, which represent the rich landscape of Santa Cruz. Complementing the murals, bold accent wall colors tie all of the individual spaces together, making this children’s dental office uniquely fun and uplifting.

The Dientes Community Dental Care is the first of three projects to be completed on the same piece of property as part of a healthy living community. The goal of the community is to provide accessible and affordable housing and healthcare for low income families. Also a part of this healthy living community are the Santa Cruz Community Health Clinic (directly across from Dientes) and a new 57-unit apartment complex still in progress.

Natividad Acute Rehabilitation Center

Natividad Acute Rehabilitation Center

Location

Salinas, CA

Project Type

WRD Architects teamed with Natividad Medical Center to remodel its existing 21,000-square-foot Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU) — the largest of its kind in Monterey County. Located in Salinas, the ARU provides inpatient and outpatient services for individuals who have suffered an injury or complex medical condition that may cause a disability. This OSHPD-1 remodel was spurred by the increasingly consumer-driven nature of facility selection by new rehab patients.

The renovation added four acute rehabilitation beds and four new dialysis beds, bringing the total capacity of the ARU up to 24 beds.  The project also added new finishes, furnishings, equipment, and nurses’ stations throughout.  The ARU also features outdoor garden space and refurbished gym and dining room areas.

The project included meticulously planned phased improvements that were designed to minimize the impact of construction to the Unit’s patients. Despite the extensive reach of the project, not a single patient bed went empty as a result of construction. In total square footage of improvements, this is Natividad’s largest remodel since the hospital was built in 1999.

611 Abbott Medical Office Building

611 Abbott Medical Office Building

Location

Salinas, CA

Project Type

WRD Architects partnered with Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System to design a two-story medical office building complete with luxuriant landscaping throughout the site, including mature olive trees at the front entry and a rooftop garden accessible to all building users.  The ground floor houses a physical therapy space, which includes an MRI unit and a therapy spa.  The upper floor features nurse training and administrative areas, along with a state-of-the-art clinical simulation lab.   The lab includes a control room, two simulation areas and debriefing rooms.

“Simulation has been used for many years in aviation, the military and in medicine,” said Rachel Failano, RN, MSN, Clinical Nurse Educator, Clinical Simulation/Skills Lab Coordinator, “but it is new territory for nursing, and in a non-teaching hospital setting in particular. It adds an entirely new dimension to learning. We can create specific patient care environments and scenarios using high-fidelity, human simulators, rather than patients, to learn the most effective and safest ways to respond in situations.”

Outside the medical facility, Bio Swales, treatment systems, sediment filters, and grease interceptors were designed to treat and control stormwater from parking lots.

PrimeCare Medical Office Building

Location

Salinas, CA

Project Type

Working with Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System, WRD Architects created a state-of-the-art medical office building that is home to the largest private primary care physicians’ group in Monterey County. The 45,000-square-foot facility transformed a vacant three-acre lot into a fully landscaped property, which now includes an underground 16,000-cubic-foot stormwater treatment system.

The two-story building includes a large covered entry with an atrium lobby, roof deck, and outdoor seating. Inside, an innovative floor plan consisting of sky-lit nurses’ station modules ringed with exam rooms efficiently links patient care areas with laboratory facilities, conference rooms, and treatment areas.

5 Lower Ragsdale

Healthcare

Location

Monterey, CA

Project Type

Working within a “landlocked,” windowless-space, WRD Architects’ interior design team successfully incorporated the beauty and calming nature of the outdoors within a new patient lobby at 5 Lower Ragsdale, a 1980’s warehouse building that WRD and the Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System has transformed into a state-of-the-art medical center.

The interior lobby design literally brought the outside in through the installation of new skylights, planted trees, and the placement of a huge natural boulder that acts as a natural separation between the lobby and an adjacent hallway. The glass-paneled water feature engages both sight and sound while subtly incorporating the client’s logo.
