The building provides seven one-bedroom apartments as well as three studio units for long-term residents.  The second floor contains dormitory-style rooms for more short-term clients.  There are also several shared spaces including a community room, a living room, a kitchen and dining room.

The exterior includes a beautifully landscaped outdoor area with paved pathways and ample seating. In addition, there is a private parking area for workers and clients.

Abbott Apartments

Abbott Apartments

Location

Salinas, CA

Project Type

Recently completed, our mixed-use buildings at 504 Abbott are a welcome addition to the neighborhood.  The project consisted of four mixed-use buildings with three levels each. There is retail space on the ground level with apartments on the second and third floors, which add up to a total of 110 living units.

Ryan Harrod purchased the 4-acre site several years ago with the intention of maximizing the space on the parcel by building the highest number of living units per acre (30). WRD suggested constructing four separate buildings of multiple sizes and styles to provide some variation in the exterior look. The combined square footage of the buildings comes out to 174,897.

FireFish Grill

FireFish Grill

Location

Santa Cruz, CA

Project Type

After minor fire damage, longtime restauranteur, Mark Gilbert, decided it was time to remodel FireFish Grill, located on the Santa Cruz Wharf.  He enlisted WRD Architects for the architecture and new interior finishes.  The final product is a bright, welcoming restaurant with charming nautical elements.

Light color walls are further uplifted by varying shades or blue and black accents.  A glass partition etched with sailboats separates the bar from the main dining area, mirroring the sailboats that pass by in view of the floor to ceiling windows.  Above the seating, a barreled ceiling and the ocean view give the illusion of being in a boat on the ocean.

The open air exhibition kitchen was entirely reworked, bringing the signature charcoal broiler front and center for customers to witness all elements of their dining experience.  This method of cooking on an open fire, solid fuel, charcoal broiler sets FireFish Grill apart from its competition.

Carmel Beach Hotel

Carmel Beach Hotel

Location

Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA

Project Type

Formerly the Colonial Terrace Inn, Carmel Beach Hotel is a true hidden gem of Carmel-by-the-Sea, located just a block from the beach.  The hotel is considered a historic property and required a delicate and detailed approach to not just improve, but also preserve several elements of the façade.

This project consisted of a full interior renovation of each hotel room along with the addition of a spa to serve guests.  The lobby was reworked to include a bar and a comfortable seating area in front of the cozy, Carmel stone fireplace.  It opens up to the main courtyard with a new dining area for the restaurant.

We also made improvements to the building exterior, including window and door replacements, fresh paint, and much needed ADA upgrades.  The finished hotel boasts newly planted and paved grounds with several outdoor seating areas for guests to relax and enjoy the views.

Natividad Medical Center Courtyard

Natividad Medical Center Courtyard

Location

Salinas, CA

Project Type

WRD completed a set of improvements for the existing Main Lobby Courtyard at Natividad Medical Center with proceeds from an anonymous donor, who gifted $950,000 for the entire project. To fit within the provided budget, improvements to the courtyard were limited to plants, paving, new outdoor furniture and lighting.

The goal of this project was to create serene and comfortable outdoor places for family members and patients to enjoy.  Our design divides the space into several “feature” areas consisting of planting walls, dedication plaques, and a floor labyrinth. There are also tables and chairs lining the edges of the courtyard open for anyone to use.

MLHD Building

Moss Landing Harbor District Building

Location

Moss Landing, CA

Project Type

Situated right on the water, this cold shell building overlooks the junction between Elkhorn Slough and the Monterey Bay.  The building fits in well with its practical, yet modern design, complementing this popular fishing area.

This 10,000 sqft. building is broken up by the multi-angular, visually interesting roof line and the different hues and styles of exterior siding.  It is also adorned with enormous windows on all sides, showing off the incredible views of the Bay and softening the industrial design.  The surrounding area has been landscaped with native plants and other material such as natural stone and loamy soil.

Taylor Farms Family Health & Wellness Center

Taylor Farms Family Health & Wellness Center

Location

Gonzales, CA

Project Type

Aiming to facilitate expansion of specialty care within the Southern Monterey County region, WRD was tasked with tripling the size of an existing SVMHS OSHPD-3 clinic building. WRD’s large addition allowed for essential services in an underserved area; added Specialty Care services included Pediatrics, Cardiopulmonary and Behavioral Health along with space for Diabetes education and awareness and Childbirth and Parenting classes.

The building design harmonizes with the proportions and symmetry of the existing 6,400-square-foot Mediterranean-style medical building, while a new high-ceiling lobby creates a recognizable entry and focal point while supporting additional patient visits. The existing former lobby was converted into a multi-purpose room intended for community education and training.

Chez Noir

Chez Noir

Location

Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA

Project Type

Tucked among the enchanting buildings of Carmel-by-the-Sea, Chez Noir opened its doors in the Fall of 2022. This restaurant is uniquely situated in one of the City’s newest buildings, which was designed to match the rest of the quaint downtown.

The restaurant is a mere 2,000 square feet with the dining room as the heart, providing access to the bar, kitchen, and outdoor areas. Our architects designed an “L-shaped” kitchen to ensure every inch of the space was put to use, and utilized booth-to-ceiling windows on all exterior walls to elevate and expand the dining area. Also in the main dining room, an opening reveals a portion of the kitchen, exhibiting the chefs at work and creating an intimate and unique experience between the guest and their meal.

Outside, guests can enjoy the temperate Carmel weather upon the paved patio, surrounded by planter boxes, trees, and other various shrubbery on all sides. An arbor stretches along the retaining wall and wraps around the front edge of the property, clearly defining the space as an extension of Chez Noir. The atmosphere of the restaurant is tied to the timeless architecture of the building overall.

Dignity Health Clinic

Dignity Health Clinic

Location

Scotts Valley, CA

Project Type

We had the pleasure of designing the newly opened Dignity Health Clinic in Scotts Valley, CA. Formerly leased office space, this tenant improvement project resulted in a surprisingly chic medical clinic with the most up-to-date technology and design finishes.

The 5,000 squarefoot space boasts a modern lobby, nine exam rooms, an open concept office area and more. Each exam room has a door on either side –one for patient access from the lobby area and the other for staff usage that attaches to the office area– which lends to both privacy and convenience.

Our interior design team worked within prescribed guidelines to model the color scheme and finishes after similar Dignity Health clinics across the United States. The result of this is a mixture of cool greys and warm browns complemented by bright orange accent features. The finishes in the clinic are not only stylish, but also highly functional and conform to all required medical clinic standards.
